Q: Why do I see “Speaking Email CarPlay Wants to Use google.com to Sign In"?

A: When connecting your Gmail account you will see this prompt:

This Apple security prompt appears before the Google page—it’s normal and safe to tap Continue (bottom-right).


After you tap Continue, a secure Google sign-in window appears—select your Google account, enter your password if asked, and allow Speaking Email CarPlay to access Gmail.


The wording in Apple’s dialog is quite confusing. It means the website accounts.google.com can share data with the app Speaking Email CarPlay so you can securely connect your account. We never see your password. We only use your name and email address to create your account, and your mail access solely for the app’s features. We don’t share your information with third parties, and you can revoke access anytime in your Google Account settings.


Speaking Email completes Google’s annual CASA security assessment for apps using restricted Gmail scopes. This independent audit (by a Google-approved assessor) validates our controls on personal data handling.




What is Speaking Email CarPlay?

An app for iPhone and Apple CarPlay that reads your email out loud to you. It intelligently extracts content from emails (minus the signatures, disclaimers and threads). And it lets you action your email - archive, mark-as-read, trash, flag - using the CarPlay interface controls. It works Office 365 and Gmail email accounts, as well as most other providers including any standard IMAP server.
